Lake Nantahala is one of the areas most pristine mountain lakes. Atlantans have recently discovered its beauty, and land can be "scarce" but is available.

Over 70 percent of the lands that border Lake Hiawssee are owned by the National Forestry Service. Built as a flood control reservoir during President Roosevelt's term, the emerald green waters lure vacationers back year after year.

The Hiwassee River snakes it way through town and into the countryside before flowing into Lake Hiwassee. Thousands of small creeks and streams pour into the river, gathering steam along the way.
